Cricket | Momentum One Day Cup

Dolphins looking to the heavens for respite

It’s become a familiar tale. Any mention of the Sunfoil Dolphins is usually followed by the pitter-patter of rain drops. The players are climbing walls while coach Lance Klusener is almost ready to chuck away his fishing rod in disgust.

The KZN franchise makes the trek to Supersport Park on Friday to face the Nashua Titans in the Momentum One-Day Cup and top-order star Cameron Delport admits that they will do just about anything for a game.

“We might have to change our name, or something...anything,” he bemoaned.

“It is almost not worth talking about, but it has just been the most frustrating few weeks ever. We have prepared so well for games, and then just had to sit around in the change-room and watch the rain come down. It is getting harder and harder to take, and we haven’t been able to build any sort of rhythm as a team.”

Delport also pointed out that, had they not been rained off, they would have fancied their chances to win at least some of those matches. “No game is easy, but we would have backed ourselves to win, especially at home. That would have been four points each time, and if you add those to our total, it makes a huge difference.”

Three wash-outs have left the Sunfoil Dolphins in the doldrums, depending on other teams’ results to help them out as they try to sneak into the play-offs. They will have to do that the hard way, against the rampant Nashua Titans on Friday.

“They look in good form, and it won't be easy to beat them,” added Delport. “The way Henry Davids played the other night was unbelievable, and we will have to find a way past that.”

As for the Nashua Titans, they will look to keep their foot firmly on the pedal, after amassing 322 against the Chevrolet Knights in midweek.

That was on the back of a wonderful 166 by Henry Davids, who said he felt in good touch going into the game. “I’ve been feeling good, and I felt really good out there from the start,” he admitted.

So imperious was the opener that he smashed his career-best on an empty stomach - after skipping lunch!

“The physio gave me some grief about not eating, and that is why I ended up cramping at the end.”

The Sunfoil Dolphins may well wonder just how much more damage a fully fed Davids can inflict if they let him get off to a flyer again.

With time running out to make a charge, they have no choice but to beat the Nashua Titans at their fortress, and then do the same to the Chevrolet Warriors next week.

“All we can do is play what’s in front of us,"” Delport said. “We are not going to put any pressure on ourselves, but we also know that we still have some hope left in this competition.”

Play at Supersport Park starts at 3pm.

The Nashua Titans will be using this match to launch their Junior Fan area for members of the Nashua Titans Fan Club. The first 10 members to arrive will have the chance to interview some of the players in the Junior Fan area and those members, who buy two tickets, will get another two tickets free.

All primary school children from grade 0 to grade 7 are eligible to become members of the Nashua Titans Junior Fans Club.

The Northerns Cricket Union will also be introducing to their fans all their age group teams going to the various national and regional tournaments during the interval between innings.
