Warriors crush Cobras

Basheer Walters produced a wonderful bowling spell to help the Chevrolet Warriors defeat the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras by 76 runs in their Momentum One Day Cup match at Buffalo Park in East London on Friday.

Full Scorecard – Warriors v Cobras

Walters ended with figures of 6-0-23-3, which included a double strike in the 33rd over to remove the dangerous Justin Kemp (2) and Yaseen Vallie (30), who was starting to look the part.

The Cobras, or rather Richard Levi, started with a bang. Levi looked like the player everyone knows and loves to watch as he smashed the ball to the boundary with regularity. Andrew Puttick was the first to depart, scoring just two, in a partnership of 29.

Levi was joined by Stiaan van Zyl, and the pair added 58 for the second wicket in just 8.3 overs. Van Zyl (21) was caught by Michael Price off the bowling of Jon-Jon Smuts.

Then the wheels came off for the Cobras as, yet again, they lost wickets at regular intervals, and were not able to out any partnerships together.

The only other partnership that was worth anything of value was a 45-run stand between Levi and Vallie. When Levi, who made a wonderful 83 off just 77 balls, which included 11 boundaries and a six, was caught by Colin Ingram off the bowling of Smuts, the Cobras dressing room were starting to fidget nervously.

Dane Vilas (16) added 25 with Vallie for the fifth wicket, but when he departed, the Cobras were 158 for five and staring down the barrel of a gun.

Walters entered the fray and removed Kemp and Vallie within four balls in the 33rd over. There was no other resistance from the Cobras tail as the team from Cape Town capitulated and were bowled out for 186 inside 38 overs.

Andrew Birch also picked up 3-42 runs off 7.1 overs, while Smuts claimed 2-31 in eight overs.

Simon Harmer bowled beautifully up front, returning figures of 5-0-13-1, his first wicket of the competition. He came back for one over which went for 12, but still ended with 6-0-25-1.

The Warriors had earlier won the toss and elected to bat first and produced a steady start. Openers Smuts and Price added 53 for the first wicket before Smuts was bowled by Alistair Gray for 25. Colin Ingram (7) was sent packing when Justin Ontong and Vilas produced some good work to run the Proteas man out.

Ashwell Prince (19) could not kick on after adding 30 runs for the third wicket with Price. Price made a very patient 55 of 97 deliveries and it was up to Davy Jacobs (46 off 46 balls) and Wayne Parnell (62 off 64 balls) to boost the Warriors total.

Parnell and co hammered 26 runs off the final over that was bowled by the young left-arm seamer Beuren Hendricks. Hendricks will want to forget this match as he conceded 57 runs in just five overs, even though he claimed two wickets.

The 'old guard' of the Cobras used all their experience to restrict the Warriors batting line-up. Charl Langeveldt (10-0-39-0), Justin Kemp (10-0-45-2) and Johann Louw (10-1-46-2) really bowled wonderfully for the Western Cape side.

The win has now moved the Warriors above the Cobras on the log, leaving the defending champions rock bottom on four points. The Cobras face off against the Chevrolet Knights in Paarl on Sunday while the Warriors host the Nashua Titans in Port Elizabeth the same day.
