Dolphins claim bonus point in Bloem
The Sunfoil Dolphins registered their first win of the season in the Momentum One Day Cup when they beat the Chevrolet Knights by 128 runs to claim a bonus point at Chevrolet Park in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.
Full Scorecard – Knights v Dolphins
After a quickfire innings of 91 runs off 73 balls from Vaughn van Jaarsveld helped the Dolphins post a score of 311 in their 50 overs, the Dolphins restricted the Knights to 183.
The Knights struggled in the run-chase from the start, when a hostile opening spell from Lonwabo Tsotsobe was enough to pick up the wicket of Rilee Roussouw in the third over.
Roussouw was brilliantly caught by Van Jaarsveld in the covers for five after a well struck drive.
The Bloemfontein men were without the services of Reeza Hendricks after he rolled his ankle earlier in the day and was taken to hospital for a scan.
With the wicket getting slow and low in the evening, Craig Alexander produced a ball that kept low to Ryan Bailey, who played the ball back onto his stumps for three off 18 deliveries.
After 10 overs, the Knights had managed to score only 28 runs for the loss of the two wickets, and the required run-rate had climbed to more than seven to the over.
Tsotsobe and Alexander were both given a five-over opening spell, in which they conceded only 12 and 14 runs respectively, each claiming a wicket.
After a 45-run partnership between Michael Erlank and Werner Coetsee, Erlank tried to release the shackles and was caught at mid-off by Tsotsobe off the bowling of Imraan Khan for 47 from 79 balls.
In Khan’s next over, he dismissed Coetsee for 30 from 24 deliveries when the ball was hit straight up, David Miller completing the catch, then claimed Johan van der Wath’s wicket for a duck when he was caught by Alexander.
Nicky Boje and Ryan McLaren put on a partnership which passed 50 in the 35th over, but 311 was always out of their reach.
Boje fell in the 38th over, caught at short fine leg by Alexander off the bowling of Prenelan Subrayen for 31 from 27 deliveries.
He was followed by Du Preez (1) and Triegaardt (0) as the Dolphins claimed victory. McLaren was left unbeaten on 39 from 48 deliveries.
All of the Dolphins' bowlers had a good match. Alexander picked up three for 31 in eight overs, Khan got three for 24 in four and Tsotsobe finished with one for 23 in seven overs.
After the Dolphins won the toss and elected to bat, they made a fantastic start, bringing up their 50 without the loss of a wicket in the 10th over.
The breakthrough finally came in the 12th over, when Dillion du Preez removed Divan van Wyk for 25.
Vaughn van Jaarsveld strode to the crease with the Dolphins three down to join Cody Chetty and they both looked immediately comfortable.
They stroked the ball all around the ground and managed to lift the run-rate above five to the over.
In the 34th over, the partnership came to an end as a Du Preez delivery kept low and bowled Chetty for a well-played 30 from his 39 balls faced.
The in-form David Miller joined Van Jaarsveld and they took full advantage of the mandatory power-play from overs 35-40. The 39th over was the highlight as the pair hit 21 runs from the over.
In the 40th over, Van Jaarsveld brought up a well deserved 50 from 44 deliveries, including eight fours. The power-play cost the Knights 50 runs.
Miller's knock came to an unfortunate end in the 44th over, when he played a Du Preez delivery onto his foot and it then rolled onto his stumps for 35 from 32 deliveries.
Robbie Frylinck and Van Jaarsveld continued the onslaught before the Knights were finally able to see the back of Van Jaarsveld when, in search of boundaries, he was caught by Rilee Rossouw for 91 from 73 balls from a McLaren delivery in the 49th over.
Frylinck helped push the total over the 300 mark, before he too fell in the 49th over for a quickfire 31 from 19 deliveries.
Coetsee was the most economical bowler for the Knights with figures of one for 48 in his ten overs, while Du Preez (8-0-65-3) and McLaren (10-1-55-2) helped pick up the wickets.
The bonus-point win leapfrogs the Dolphins ahead of the Knights on the Momentum One Day Cup log.
