Cricket | Sunfoil Series

Bad light stops play as Lions fight back

Rassie van der Dussen led a spirited fightback by the bizhub Highveld Lions as he catapulted the hosts to 111 for one in pursuit of the massive 544 scored by the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras in their Sunfoil Series match at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium before play was delayed due to bad light after tea on Friday.

The Lions resumed on 53 without loss after tea, but Justin Kemp struck early when he trapped the skipper, Stephen Cook, in front for 19 with the score on 57.

Van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma led the rescue-operation with a fine, undefeated 54-run partnership.

Van der Dussen was defeated on 68 when the elements intruded, having faced 121 balls. He slammed 11 fours and his square drives and cuts were exquisite.

Kemp was the pick of the attack with his 1-19 in 11 overs.

The Cobras resumed on Friday morning on 322 for seven, and benefited from a scintillating 155 runs off 250 balls for the eighth wicket between Dane Vilas and Dane Piedt.

Vilas was eventually caught behind off legspinner Eddie Leie for 149, having faced 211 balls and hitting 19 fours and a six.

Piedt holed out to Hardus Viljoen at long-off for a career-best 92, having belted 13 fours.

Earlier, Justin Ontong hit his 22nd first-class century. He resurrecting the faltering innings when he joined Yaseen Vallie with the score on 62 for three. His 119 came off 206 balls, with 13 fours.

The Cobras secured 5.34 batting bonus points, while the Lions earned three with the ball.

Viljoen finished with 2-109 in 17 overs. The 18-year old Kagiso Rabada captured 3-90 in 26 overs.

Legspinner Leie took 2-137 in 34 overs.

The Lions lacked the services of a holding seam bowler and good accurate spinner as the very talented Leie, still in his formative years as a first-class spinner, lacked control.
