Title-clinching Cobras remain in control

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras not only sealed the Sunfoil Series title on Friday, but they continued to obliterate the Chevrolet Knights at Chevrolet Park in Bloemfontein.

The hosts were reduced to 60 for four at stumps in their second innings on the second day, still 165 runs behind the Cobras' first innings.

The Cobras had already clinched the Sunfoil Series title before the lunch break after securing enough bonus points to ensure they cannot be overtaken, but that didn't stop the Cape franchise from battering their opposition.

Richard Levi, Stiaan van Zyl and Justin Ontong all scored centuries as the Cobras notched up 416 for six before declaring, 225 runs ahead of the Knights' first innings total of 191.

Resuming the day on 104 for one, 87 runs behind the Knights, Levi and Van Zyl got together for a thunderous 145-run partnership to take the visitors into the lead early on day two.

Levi brought up his hundred before he was dismissed, clean bowled by Shadley van Schalkwyk for 121.

The partnership between Levi and Van Zyl was the highest second-wicket partnership of the Sunfoil Series, surpassing the previous best of 129 between Dominic Hendricks and Temba Bavuma for the Lions.

Skipper Justin Ontong joined Van Zyl out in the middle just before lunch and the pair guided their side to safety at the break.

The two picked up where they left off after the lunch break as Van Zyl scored his second consecutive first class century while Ontong looked equally settled.

Van Zyl and Ontong shared a 200-run partnership for the third wicket, before Van Zyl was out for 148, caught by Gihahn Cloete off Johan van der Wath.

Ontong added 109 before he fell to Obus Pienaar, also caught by Cloete.

Yaseen Vallie and Dane Vilas failed to contribute and the Cobras decided to declare, a decision which proved to be a good one as Johann Louw ripped through the Knights’ top order, picking up three wickets to leave the hosts reeling.

Ryan Second managed just four, Cloete was out for a duck, Ryan Bailey added eight and Van Schalkwyk managed just one as the Knights fell to pieces in the final session of the second day to leave the Cobras well on top at stumps.

Rilee Rossouw and Obus Pienaar will resume day three with a mountain to climb while the Cobras bowlers will be baying for blood, hoping to wrap up the match as soon as possible.
