Warriors and Lions ride the see-saw in PE

The Chevrolet Warriors and the bizhub Highveld Lions were involved in a see-saw day in their Sunfoil Series clash at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

The Lions were dismissed for 157 in their first innings after winning the toss and electing to bat first, with Neil McKenzie top-scoring with 46 off 125. The Warriors stuttered in their reply, ending the day on 64 for three, still 93 runs behind the visitors.

The Lions got off to a shaky start with Stephen Cook and Quinton de Kock both dismissed early on as Andrew Birch got off to a roaring start.

Alviro Petersen looked like he might steady the ship, but after facing 72 balls his defence was shattered by Ayabulela Gqamane.

Petersen tried to cut square, but ended up hitting the ball straight to Colin Ingram at point instead and the Lions were looking shaky at 42 for three.

McKenzie and Temba Bavuma then combined for 58-run stand before Bavuma, coming forward in defence, was beaten by a Gqamane special and the batsman found himself trapped in front of his stumps as the Lions stuttered.

Zander de Bruyn and Thami Tsolekile both tried their hardest, but Simon Harmer and Birch trapped both players leg before. The tail failed to wag, with nobody else managing to score more than 10 and the Lions folded to 157 all out.

The Warriors' reply was equally shaky with Michael Price falling early chasing a wide delivery from Chris Morris and edging the ball to McKenzie in the slips.

Arno Jacobs followed soon afterwards after edging through to the keeper to leave the Warriors reeling on 39 for two.

Davy Jacobs added 33 before he was bowled through the gate by De Bruyn and it was down to Ashwell Prince and Ingram to see out the day.

The pair survived and took the Warriors to 64 for three at stumps in what is proving to be a rather up and down affair in Port Elizabeth.
