Dolphins close in on 200-run lead

Jonathan Vandiar, Kyle Abbott and Calvin Savage guided the Sunfoil Dolphins to 210 for nine at stumps on day two of their Sunfoil Series match against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.

Vandiar top scored with a well played 78, and shared in a 6th-wicket partnership of 84 with Daryn Smit (24). Abbott and Savage, who were the chief destroyers in the Cobras' first innings, added 56 valuable runs for the 8th wicket, to stretch their lead over the Cobras to a defendable 178 runs.

Smit was the first to fall after tea, being caught off the bowling of Lizaad Williams. Vandiar lost his wicket when he edged a ball to Dane Vilas behind the stumps off the bowling of Johann Louw with the score on 150 for seven.

Abbott and Savage then stroked the ball around the field, and brought up their 50-run partnership in just 61 minutes. Abbott (28) was eventually caught by Justin Kemp off the bowling of Alistair Gray, who only bowled four overs.

Savage was trapped in front by Gray in the third last over of the day for a well played 28, leaving Keshav Maharaj, on one, and Mthokozisi Shezi, also on one, to resume on day three.

Gray (2-7), Kemp (2-32), Louw (2-43) and Beuran Hendricks (2-62) shared the wickets amongst themselves.

The Cobras had been dismissed before lunch on day two, losing six wickets for just 76 runs, with Abbott (4-51) and Savage (3-65) doing the damage.

Gray top scored scored with 36, while there were quite a few 20's all the way down the order.

The Dolphins, who had been sent into bat on day one, were dismissed on the stroke of tea on day one, for 174, thanks to a workman-like 92 from Divan van Wyk. Van Wyk spent 238 minutes at the crease while striking 13 boundaries.

Hendricks, who had struck three times after lunch to reduce the visitors to 96 for seven, eventually finished with 5-47.
