Cricket | Sunfoil Series

Cobras defeat could have a double impact

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras take on the Sunfoil Dolphins in a Sunfoil Series clash at Sahara Park Newlands starting on Thursday and, after the home side lost their first match this season against a feisty bizhub Highveld Lions side over the weekend, the visitors might be feeling quietly confident knowing that the Cape Town side who have dominated the competition can be beaten.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras lost by eight wickets to the bizhub Highveld Lions after a spectacular batting collapse in their second innings which saw them fold to 169 all out and, while they are still close to ten points clear at the top, Sunfoil Dolphins skipper Daryn Smit reckons the loss might be a bad thing as they could be looking to eke out the gap as the competition starts to draw to a close.

‘I think we can definitely take positives from the result over the weekend knowing that the Cobras are beatable. But on the flip side, it might also be a bad thing as they will be even more determined to come back harder and stretch that points gap at the top of the table,” said Smit.

“The guys have put in some hard work in the Durban humidity, though, and it’s a big game for us. We just hope our hard work will be rewarded.

The Chevrolet Warriors and the bizhub Highveld Lions are now both hot on the heels of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras. The Chevrolet Warriors play the Chevrolet Knights over the weekend while the bizhub Highveld Lions have what should be an easier match against the Nashua Titans over the weekend.

The Nashua Titans have struggled for form and are yet to win a match and Smit reckons this will only inspire the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras even more.

“The Lions have a game against the Titans who aren’t doing so well so that will be even more motivation for the Cobras to come back strongly.”

While the Sunfoil Dolphins have also struggled this season, having won just one match, Smit says that there are some good signs, one of them being that they have managed to bowl sides out, but the skipper admits they haven’t capitalised on strong positions.

“This season we have started bowling sides out and taking 20 wickets which is a big positive for us. We have bowled ourselves into winning positions but we haven’t quite been able to wrap up games as well as we would have liked,” Smit said.

Lance Klusener took over as coach at the start of the season and, while it has been a frustrating season for the coach with both bad weather and some frustrating performances all impacting the result, Smit says Klusener’s influence has been really positive and it has inspired a different brand of cricket in the Sunfoil Dolphins camp.

“Lance has come in and changed our brand of cricket and motivated us and kept us positive and I think that has shown in, like I said, the way we have taken wickets. He’s good to have around we’re all learning a lot.”
