Support the game

Before I continue let me state one thing loud and clear.

There is a small minority of cricket supporters in Australia that can be unbearable and uncouth and for some reason or another take great delight in ruining things for others.

That sector of Australia’s population has always disappointed me and because of the actions of some idiots at the Wanderers during the 1st Test, I am now doubly disappointed.

I thought the behaviour of some of the fans was diabolical and I really thought South Africans were above that kind of puerile display. Not only was there a disgusting spitting episode where an imbecile confronted one of the games finest players in Steve Waugh but also other Australians were showered with beer and copped an enormous amount of verbal abuse along with the odd unsavoury banner.

I know what you’re thinking. South Africans get similar treatment on tours ‘down under’ so what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I don’t disagree for one moment. Yes, they get undesirable attention with all sorts of things hurled at them – just ask Pat Symcox for a more graphic description. My point is it should not happen anywhere and if it does those responsible should get the book thrown at them.

I was astounded when Steve Waugh walked out to bat and it seemed like the entire stadium booed him. The same happened to Shane Warne. I spoke to some of the Aussie journos after that particular day’s play and they assured me never before had they witnessed Steve getting a reception like that. C’mon guys – there is such a thing as friendly rivalry and a love / hate relationship but that was plain appalling manners.

The amazing thing is that the jeering and booing that greeted those two individuals would have provided just the tonic they needed to substantially increase their determination.

No true sportsman will baulk at friendly rivalry and banter. In fact if the truth were told, they probably enjoy it. But no one should be subjected to crass, brainless behaviour – here or abroad.

Sport is a national pastime in this country and we should all treat it and it’s competitors with the respect it deserves.

My plea is to the cricket loving people of Newlands. Show the undesirables at the Wanderers how it should be done.
