Relax and back yourselves

Over the last couple of days I have been checking out the Olympics from Sri lanka and also doing a great deal of thinking about the performance of the cricketers on this tour.

With regards to the Games in Athens, I have thouroughly enjoyed some memorable individual performances and have noticed that for the talented athletes there is a real sense of enjoyment in competing. Obviously, the nerves are there with a sense of confidence but they are thriving on the opportunity of displaying their skills. Smiles, excessive celebrations and mutual respect are on show on an hourly basis. I started thinking about South Africa's cricketers.

Throughout the tour I have hardly seen any signs of enjoyment on the field of play. Quite simply, in my mind, the players are trying too hard. It is a fine line at this level to be mentally balanced so that you can perform at your best. It is a real art to be determined yet at the same time relexed enough to enable your natural ability and flair to come to the fore.

As we are all aware, the tour has reached a bit of a downward spiral for the visitors and in essence has almost reached the point of no return. My advice is to embrace the challenge that now lies ahead and more importantly enjoy the task of salvaging this series. Should this be achieved it will enable the players to react instinctively and exhibit their ability to the levels we know they are capable of.

It is easy to enjoy playing when you are winning and a tough call to channel that energy when you are not.

Smith's men now have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The tenseness must dissipate but the determination must remain.

Give us a smile guys and enjoy the moment.
