The attack of the Nashua Cape Cobras dominated in bowling friendly conditions as the Nashua Dolphins were dismissed for 237 in the first innings of their SuperSport Series match at Kingsmead in Durban on Saturday.
The Cobras survived the remaining six overs of the day without any setbacks before the close as Andrew Puttick and Alistair Gray guided them to 3/0 at stumps.
No play was possible on the first two days of the match because of extensive rain and a wet outfield.
Earlier, Dave Miller fought bravely for the hosts and led an aggressive counter-attack in an attempt to inspire the lower order after the Dolphins were in trouble on 116/5 and later on 163/6.
Miller smashed 46 off 86 balls, with five fours and two sixes.
Pierre de Bruyn (21, 52 balls, 4x4) and Miller added 47 runs in 16.2 overs for the sixth wicket before Du Bruyn was caught by Stiaan van Zyl off Kleinveldt.
Thereafter, the Cobras took control.
Miller perished shortly after tea when he took the aerial route against part-time off-spinner Justin Ontong in an attempt to complete his half-century.
He only succeeded in presenting Gray with a catch at deep square leg and was gone for 46 (86 balls, 5x4, 2x6) with the score on 196.
Vernon Philander had Andrew Hall caught by Gray at square leg for 15 as the Dolphins slumped to 210/8.
Rory Kleinveldt took his third wicket when he had Daryn Smit caught at second slip by Andrew Puttick for 17 as the hosts stumbled to 225/9.
Philander had Mthokozisi Shezi caught behind to conclude the Dolphins-innings on 237.
Philander was the pick of the attack, with 4/45 in 18.2 overs, while Rory Kleinveldt captured 3/49 in 23 overs.
Justin Kemp finished with 2/22 from thirteen overs.
The Dolphins endured a torrid time during the morning sesson in overcast conditions and on a pitch with some moisture in it.
Kleinveldt and Philander captured the early wickets of Cameron Delport (20) and Imraan Khan (12), with the latter battling for 81 minutes against a ball that seamed all over the place.
Ahmed Amla (27, 58 balls, 3x4) steadied the innings with a 47-run partnership for the third wicket with Loots Bosman before Amla was caught behind by Ryan Canning off Kleinveldt.
The Dolphins still looked in good shape after lunch on 107/3, but a double-strike by Kemp to remove Bosman for 34 and Jon Kent for 13, put the hosts back on their heels.
From that moment, they were on the back foot, and they failed to regain the lost ground.
Amazingly, there were ten batsmen who got into double figures, but they simply could not make progress from there on a tough wicket.
