Pune fall short against Delhi

The Delhi Daredevils kept their nerve with the ball to secure just their second win of the season, beating the Pune Warriors by 15 runs in a bottom-of-the-table scrap at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Sunday.

Umesh Yadav (two for 24) and Ashish Nehra bowled with skill at the death, giving spinner Shabhaz Nadeem enough runs to defend in the final over.

Despite Steven Smith clubbing a six in the last over, it was too little, too late for the hosts, who needed an unlikely 28 off the last six balls.

The Warriors paid for a pedestrian tempo in the middle of their innings, in pursuit of the Daredevils' 164 for five.

Robin Uthappa (37) and Aaron Finch (37) had given the Pune outfit a fine start with 76 for the opening wicket, but then fell within four Irfan Pathan balls of each other to turn the game.

Yuvraj Singh (31 off 24 balls) tried, but couldn't get into gear, and Luke Wright struggled to 19, as the Daredevils tightened the runs up. The Pune side eventually ended on 149 for four, with Smith ending on 17 not out.

Earlier, David Warner clubbed four sixes and just as many fours, as he scored a decisive 51 not out off just 25 balls.

Medium-pacer Ashok Dinda removed the dangerous duo of Mahela Jayawardene (12) and Virender Sehwag (28), as Pune made a promising start with the ball. Keeper Uthappa helped himself to three catches, as he enjoyed a fine all-round display.

But the Delhi side held on for the win, which lifted them off the foot of the table, and pushed Pune below them.
