Cobras take step closer to title

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras needed just 4.5 overs to score the required 17 runs for victory, ending on 20 for one, as they inflicted a nine-wicket defeat on the Nashua Titans in the Sunfoil Series match at Sahara Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday, which puts them in prime position for the title.

Full Scorecard – Cobras v Titans

Stiaan van Zyl (8) and Justin Ontong (8) both struck two boundaries to see the visitors home. Alistair Gray (0) retired hurt after just one ball from Rowan Richards, while Andrew Puttick (4) was caught off the bowling of JP de Villiers in the second over.

The hosts had earlier been dismissed for 195 in their second innings, improving on their first innings score by just a single run.

Resuming after the luncheon interval on 147 for five, Farhaan Berhardien managed to add just four runs to his score before being caught by Charl Langeveldt off the bowling of Beuran Hendricks for 48. Berhardien spent 186 minutes at the crease, facing 145 deliveries and striking five boundaries.

Other than Behardien and Francois le Clus (50), there was precious little support for the home side, as they capitulated under the pressure from Johann Louw, Hendricks and Justin Kemp.

Hendricks, who struck twice before the close of play on day two, when he removed Heino Kuhn (14) and Henry Davids (0) in successive overs, ended with figures of 18-4-42-3, which almost matched his first innings figures of 3-47.

The experienced Louw, who claimed four wickets in the first innings, finished with 3-52 from 18 overs while Kemp was miserly as ever, conceding only 27 runs in 12.4 overs while taking three wickets. Richards (10) was the last wicket to fall as he was caught behind off the bowling of Kemp.

The victory was set-up on day one when Justin Ontong won the toss and asked the home side to bat first. The Titans found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 59 for six in the 29th over.

But a seventh-wicket partnership of 78 between Simon von Berg (47) and Roelof van der Merwe (36) spared the blushes somewhat, to give some sort of respectability to the scorecard.

Von Berg struck eight boundaries in his 93-minute stay while Van der Merwe faced 74 balls, which included four fours. JP de Villiers (28) and CJ de Villiers (14) contributed to the total as well with a ninth-wicket partnership of 36 in 6.2 overs.

But by the close of day one, the Cobras had already posted 109 for two, with Van Zyl set on 44 not out. Van Zyl went on to make 123, in a 274 minute stay, with 18 boundaries.

Kemp joined in the fun by making 73 off 122 balls with eight fours and three sixes and shared in two 60-run partnerships with Van Zyl for the seventh wicket, and with Louw for the eighth wicket.

Behardien was the surprise package with the ball as he claimed 3-57 from 19 overs while Richards, JP de Villiers and Van der Merwe all claimed two wickets apiece.

The Cobras took a huge leap towards winning the Sunfoil Series title with a huge haul of 19.08 points from the match, taking their tally to 111.26 with one match remaining.

The Titans' dismal season continued as they only claimed 5.88 points from this encounter, and suffered their seventh defeat of the season.
