Brett Matthews passes away

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday expressed its sadness and sympathy on the passing of Brett Matthews on Thursday at the age of 50. He had been involved in a motor vehicle accident at the beginning of last month.

A tall left-arm seam bowler who was an awkward customer to face with his pace and bounce, he represented Western Province, Eastern Province, Transvaal and SA Universities and also played in unofficial limited overs international matches against an Australian XI in the 1986-87 season.

One of his two younger brothers, Craig, represented the Proteas in 18 tests and 56 ODI’s between 1991 and 1997.

“This is a tragedy in the proper sense of the word,” commented CSA Acting CEO Jacques Faul. “On behalf of the South African cricket family I extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends on their loss in this very difficult time.”
