Cobras brush Knights aside by 10 wickets
Richard Levi smashed 52 undefeated runs to help the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras destroy the Chevrolet Knights by ten wickets in the Momentum One Day Cup match at Boland Park in Paarl on Sunday and claim a bonus point to boot.
Full scorecard – Cobras v Knights
Levi's 52 came off just 33 balls (6x4, 2x6) while Andrew Puttick (35 not out, 6x4) joined in the fun. Both openers took a liking to all the Knights bowlers, scoring runs on both sides of the wicket with ease. The Cobras reached the winning target of 95 in 10.3 overs.
Puttick came out of his shell when he aggressively pulled McLaren (3-0-27-0) for four through mid-wicket. A few balls later, Levi hooked him for four as well.
Johan van der Wath (5.3-0-40-0) came in for some stick as well. Levi flicked him off his legs for what was signalled a six, but after a conference, the umpires changed the decision to a four. The very next ball, Levi powerfully drove him for four past long on.
Puttick and Levi both struck boundaries in the sixth over bowled by McLaren. Puttick cut beautifully and Levi powerfully lofted him for four over the cover region.
Nothing that the three Knights bowlers threw at the opening pair worked. Even Duanne Olivier (2-0-23-0) was smashed to all parts of the ground by the pair.
Levi ended the match by stroking Van der Wath through mid-wicket for four to bring up his 50. This is Levi's second consecutive half century in the tournament, following his 83 off 77 balls against the Chevrolet Warriors in East London on Friday.
Earlier, the Knights captain won the toss and decided that they would bat first. Their innings did not get off to the best of starts and just got worse as they were skittled for a paltry 94 in 34.1 overs.
Michael Erlank (0) was caught behind off the bowling of Langeveldt off just the third ball of the innings. Johann Louw got into the act when Justin Ontong took a brilliant catch at point to remove Werner Coetsee (3) in the sixth over. Onton injured himself in taking the catch and left the field shortly afterwards.
Langeveldt produced a peach of a delivery to remove Ryan Bailey (1) when he uprooted his off-stump in the following over.
Louw and Langeveldt's combined firgures for their opening spells was 11-3-25-3, which is phenomenal in anyone's book.
Justin Kemp replaced Louw after the 11th over and immediately claimed the wicket of Rilee Rossouw for 16, caught by Puttick at first slip. Kemp claimed his second wicket when Dane Vilas took an excellent catch, diving low to his left, after an inside edge off the bat of Obus Pienaar (7).
Kemp then claimed the wicket of former Proteas spinner, Nicky Boje (8), and two balls later, McLaren (10) was run out at the strikers end after a mix-up and a good throw from Yaseen Vallie.
Van der Wath (13) tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but became yet another Kemp victim, who bowled his ten overs on the trot, claiming 4-20.
Louw picked up his second wicket when he had Olivier (3) caught behind. Louw claimed 2-13 in his seven overs, while Vilas picked up his fifth catch of the match.
New boy Lizaad Williams claimed his first wicket of the tournament, and the final Knights' wicket, that of Shadley van Schalkwyk for a well played 29.
Langeveldt came back for two overs and ended with figures of 8-3-17-2, while Alistair Gray bowled two overs, conceding 11 runs.
The Cobras' next match is against the Sunfoil Dolphins at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town next Friday, while the Knights travel to Port Elizabeth on the same day to face the Chevrolet Warriors.
