Cycle Lab Cycling Newsletter No 22 June 2009
Dear
Dear #~#FirstName#~#
Having come across these inspirational sporting quotes this past weekend, I
thought I would share them with you:
"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is" - Vince Lombardi - football
coach.
"It's the struggle that makes you triumphant" - Micelle Akers - US Womans Soccer
Team.
"It's easier to limit yourself, but if you do, you will never reach your full
potential" - Chris Witty - Olympic Medallist.
"The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else" -
Martina Navratilova.
"You have to believe in yourself. The ones who believe in themselves the most
are the ones who win" - Florence Griffith-Joyner - Olympic Athlete.
"Winning does not always mean being first. Winning means you're doing better
than you've ever done before" - Bonnie Blair - Olympic Skater.
We are bursting with pride. Read all about
Shaun-Nick Bester, as he flies the SA Flag for Junior team in Europe. See Below

NATIONAL INFO
BESTER FLIES SA FLAG
FOR JUNIOR TEAM IN EUROPE
Toyota Supercycling Academy’s Shaun-Nick Bester, racing for the
national team, became the first South African junior male to finish on an
overall podium at a top-graded international road cycling tour, when he
claimed second place at the Vuelta al Besaya, in Spain at the weekend.

At the end of the four-stage International Cycling Union 2.1-graded tour,
Bester, son of former Comrades Marathon star, Nick Bester, was in fact tie on
time with Ibai Salas of the Navalcarnero team, but the Spaniard was awarded
first place based on the fact that he’d had better stage placings than Bester.
Salas and Bester both had a final time of 8hr 42min 12sec with Bester’s third
place on Stage 1 his highest finish. Salas was third on Stage 2 and second on
Stage 3.
“I couldn’t believe it!” said a disappointed Bester. “To lose the race on the
final stage only by a count back was heart-breaking. But I’m still happy with
second in such high quality company. My teammates were great with their support
and the Europeans are all talking about the South Africans now so we’re making
an impression.”

TOUR DE FRANCE
COUNTDOWN BROUGHT TO YOU BY BIOGEN

Before, During and After 'Tour de France' Cycling Tips brought to you
by Biogen
We have already hit the 2 week countdown to 2009 Tdf!
Biogen tips - Nutritional Supplementation
We all know very well by now that your input affects your
output. In this case, we not just referring to training and preparation, but
more specifically, what you put in your body. Over the past few weeks, we have
provided some coverage on the role and importance of nutrition. Having said
this, it is not always easy to spend the time and money required for correct
eating, and ultimately what should prepare you physically for a better
performance and result. There is such a vast amount of nutritional sport
supplements available on the market, which is exciting, but can also be
confusing at times.
The key thing is to find something that works for you, and stick with it. Having
said that it’s also important to be open to trying new things, this to prevent
getting ‘stuck in your ways’ so to speak and not embracing exciting
opportunities and products that could ultimately improve your performance and
results at the end of the day. New endurance products come out all the time,
some are good, some not so good. At Biogen, we have put together a supremely
high quality, great tasting and drug-free range of supplement endurance
products. This would be backed up by our sponsored athletes, which include the
likes of Andrew Mclean and Lynette Burger, whose achievements are too long to
even list in this short passage. This week, we supply a few simple ideas to
ensure you use the correct supplementation, in the correct quantities:
- Endurance supplements and energy drinks can be an extremely cost effective and
practical solution to your during-ride nutritional needs.
- The first thing to do is to decide on a decent supplement that’s suits your
body, and improves your performance. This can only be determined by trying
different products and seeing what works and feels best for you. A good choice
in the Biogen range would be Biogen Carbogen (High Carb
electrolyte replacement formula), Biogen Cytogen (Powerful and lasting
energy / recovery drink) or the Biogen energy gels (for instant energy
boost throughout an event). Biogen water bottles are also available at
Cycle lab in 500ml and 750ml sizes.
- For maximum performance in events lasting more than 2 hours (the time
at which muscle glycogen depletion generally occurs with cycling) is to fuel up
frequently every 20 to 30 minutes.
- Insufficient fuel/food/supplementation can obviously lead to burnout, but
excessive consumption can lead to stomach distension, bloating, nausea, and a
subsequent deterioration
- The higher the level of intensity of the ride, the simpler
carbohydrates required (E.g’s: energy drinks, gels, and fruits). On longer
rides and at lower heart rates, more complex snacks with complex
carbohydrates and a higher fat content offer other alternatives. A
reasonable goal during high intensity rides is 200 to 300 Calories (60 grams of
carbohydrate) per hour.
- For proper planning, first estimate the number of calories you will
expend in your ride (both total and per hour). Then decide on a refuelling
schedule – say every 15 to 20 minutes. You will then need to plan your
snacks/energy drinks/gels and the packaging strategy to carry them on the bike
with you. Preferably use something that is easy and convenient to carry and
consume whilst cycling.
- Lastly, something that may seem common knowledge never try something new
close to a race day or event as you may upset your stomach and performance.
Biogen’s complete range of endurance supplements are
available from Cycle lab in Fourways. For more tips and information visit your
nearest Cycle lab branch and speak to a consultant on the floor, who can also
assist you with your nutritional supplement requirements. Alternatively go
online to: www.cyclelab.co.za or www.biogen.co.za .

THE ROUGHER SIDE OF LAB
LIFE (MTB NEWS) - JHB
Brought to you by Neil Frazer.
www.cyclelab.com - Harder, Better, Stronger, Faster.
Simple day to day pleasures.
I had a good week (overall minus the inevitable annoyances). These are some of
the elements that helped. In no particular order
• Bokke, Bafanana Bafanana played with distinction and great results
• Went to a stylish and quality dinner party (hosts, guests, food, self),
• Jock Green joined the Cyclelab team and shone in CL colours. High Hopes.
• Amy, my Biokineticist at ALB Biokineticists @ Techno Gym wellness - genius
• Bought a pair of running shoes & went running. Also one of those giant balls.
• Brilliant father’s day with my wife and kids. Being alive for me is rather OK.
• The energy to start reading decent novels again – reading is pure pleasure.
• CSI New York back on our screens
• Mid-week public holiday and reduced traffic
• Going to get some great mtb training routes in Hilton for the Garmins, Tx AM
• Did a heap of outstanding admin, still have a hole in my year (and my ear)
• Kids delivered good reports – some areas of concern but boys will be boys.
• A life far less ordinary and no longer through a glass darkly.
• See you All at the XC Races at the Toyota MTN Bike park on Sunday 28th June
Toyota Cycle Lab can help make all these things happen happily.
www.cyclelab.com
• Schedules below but visit – http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/user/cyclelab

• I will not be here this week but I leave you in the capable hands of Sean
Quinn.

We have a request for more Saturday rides, but have a shortage of man
power. So, please if you would like to ride on a particular Saturday please let
me know by the Wednesday via email or sms and I’ll send it out to the club.
3. Charity Breakfast ride
The last one was VERY quiet but we know it’s because it’s chilly and we
are true Lowvelders who like staying warm, so I don’t blame you. But with a
“poor” turn out it was an interesting exercise. We had 6 riders for breakfast
raising a whopping R120.00! We nearly brushed it off saying “what can you buy
for R120?” Then remembered that we shop at Woolworths food and other luxurious
places, we thought about it simpily… R120 could buy Child Welfare 200 loaves of
bread (through connections for good prices) It’s a win win situation, we fill
your tummy and your money fills someones else’s tummy! Thank you to the regulars
but hope to see more faces at the next one.. 12th July @ News Café
3. Marshall request
This coming weekend is the Graskop Hill Climb champs. The organisers
have requested help from the local clubs for marshals. If you are not riding and
would like to help out please send me an email or sms to put your name on the
list. Marshaling is a front row seat to the racing and keep in mind how marshals
make your races a more pleasant experience! Please lend a hand.

OF LAB LIFE (MTB NEWS) - NELSPRUIT
This past Saturday was the Lowveld’s first kids only MTB race, the
Mpumalanga Inter-schools MTB series. It was awesome! 200 mini’s dicing each
other on a 2km lap route. The older they were the more laps they did. Parents
never enter their children in bigger MTb events as they think their children are
not good enough. As this was schools only, there were kids who had BMX bikes and
yet they still took part and well, parents were floored and their children’s
natural ability. This is a breeding ground for our next top cyclists! So if you
did not take your child this time make sure you do next time!

from ANY school in the Lowveld! Info – Neil Clarke 083 414 0228

OF LAB LIFE (MTB NEWS) - HEIDELBERG
wil ry of as jy iemand ken wat by ons wil inskakel kan jy my (Francois) asb
kontak op 082 921 3663. As ons weet daar is genoeg belangstelling vir so ‘n
groep/e, dan kan ons dit ‘n gereelde naweek instelling maak.
