Body of Arum’s Son Found on Mountain

Hampered by difficult terrain and deteriorating weather Saturday, rescuers worked to recover the body of John Arum, the son of the boxing promoter Bob Arum. John Arum died while mountain climbing in Washington’s North Cascades National Park.

“This is going to be a fairly technical and high-risk recovery,” said Kerry Olson, a park spokeswoman, adding that “conditions have to be ideal.”

“We don’t want to put any of our rescuers’ lives at risk doing this,” she said.

After a five-day search, the body of the 49-year-old Arum, a Seattle environmental lawyer and outdoor enthusiast, was spotted Friday from a National Park Service helicopter about 7,700 feet up the north face of 8,500-foot Storm King Mountain.

Arum is being remembered as a man who worked tirelessly to protect Washington state's natural resources.

The body was spotted Friday on Storm King mountain in North Cascades National Park. Authorities say Arum, an experienced climber, had apparently fallen during a solo trip last weekend to climb the peak.

Rescue workers are trying to develop a plan to recover his body which is in extremely rugged terrain on the mountain's north side.

Arum was a board member of the Washington Environmental Council. State Public Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark says he was a passionate advocate for environmental protection and good policy.
