Berman hits Monaco spotlight

SA promoter Rodney Berman will be involved in a high-profile tournament to be held in Monaco on March 30.

Berman’s company, Golden Gloves Promotions, and the Monte Carlo SBM group will co-present the show at the Chapiteau de Fontvielle.

The main bout is a Super Four super-middleweight eliminator in which Edwin Rodriguez fights Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna. And in a light-heavyweight bout Zsolt Erdei takes on Russian Denis Grachev.

Also on the bill is a title bout between undefeated WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Nobuhiro Ishida.

European junior middleweight champion Sergei Rabtchenko will defend his title against Adriano Nicchi.

Rodriguez, born in the Dominican Republic, now fights out of the United States. His record stands at 22-0, with 15 knockouts. Maderna is from Argentina and boasts a record of 19-0, with 13 shortcut wins.

Hungary’s Erdei is also unbeaten and boasts a record of 33-0; 18. US-based Russian Grachev stands at 12-1-1; 8.

The fighters who go through to the final will meet in a catchweight bout with a limit of 77.78 kg. The finalist will fight in Monaco on July 23 and will share $1 million, with the winner taking 60 per cent.

The 27-year-old Rodriguez is ranked No 2 at super-middleweight by the WBC and No 3 by the IBF. Maderna, 26, fought in the Olympic Games in 2008. He is the Argentine super-middleweight champion and ranked No 6 by the WBO.

Erdei, 36. is a former WBO light-heavyweight and WBC cruiserweight champion. He has fought in 12 world title fights. The 30-year-old Grachev lost to former IBF super-middleweight champion Lucien Bute in November last year.

Golovkin, 30, is from Kazakhstan and regarded as the best middleweight in the world. He has a record of 25-0, with 22 knockouts. He will make the sixth defence of his WBA belt when he takes on 38-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2; 9) from Japan. The IBO belt will also be at stake.

Rabtchenko, from Belarus, is 26 and has a record of 22-0; 18. He will make the second defence of his European junior middleweight title when he faces Italian junior middleweight champion Nicchi , who is 32 and has a record of 20-3-2; 9.

South African Stan Christodoulou will referee one of the fights.
