Buthelezi must fight Filipino again
The IBO has ordered a rematch between South African Gideon Buthelezi and Edrin Dapudong of the Philippines.
Buthelezi won their super-flyweight title bout at Emperors Palace near Johannesburg late last year but the decision was roundly criticised in South Africa and described as “robbery” in the Philippines.
Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman said on Wednesday he would try to stage the rematch as soon as possible.
"There was a great deal of controversy over the judges' decision to award the fight to Buthelezi," Berman said when he announced that the IBO had ordered a mandatory rematch.
"Many observers believed Dapudong had done enough to take the decision. We will be happy to clear the air by staging a rematch to make an end to the controversy."
"Gideon is a top-class fighter and I'm sure he will relish the opportunity to show he is a deserving champion and to retain his title in convincing fashion, without any disputes."
Berman also announced that negotiations were in progress to gain further recognition for WBC international super-flyweight champion Sipho Taliwe after his impressive victory over Mzonke Fana last year.
"The WBC has elevated Taliwe to fourth-ranked challenger for Gamaliel Diaz's title and we are confident of securing a bout against one of the fighters ranked above him, if not the champion himself," Berman said.
