Hatton to fight The Heat in SA

IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden, will fight England's Matthew Hatton in February.

Showpony Promotions announced on Thursday that "The Heat" van Heerden and Hatton would meet on their "Rumble on the Rocks" programme in honour former president Nelson Mandela.

Five-time former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and WBF heavyweight champion Michael Grant will be among those taking part in four-round exhibitions.

New Zealand rugby star Sonny Bill Williams had also been earmarked for an exhibition.

Hatton may lack the charisma and stature of his elder brother Ricky, but his fight against Van Heerden will add some serious boxing to the show.

Van Heerden has been one of the bright lights in the Golden Gloves Promotions stable.

Showpony announced that Van Heerden had been released from his contract with Golden Gloves without any further explanation.

Damian Michael, the Showpony chief executive, said no venue had yet been finalised for the tournament, but it could be held in Cape Town or Soweto.

The weigh-in and a Mandela remembrance ceremony will be held on Robben Island.
