'Tyson' stops Pius in seventh

Betuel Tyson Ushona stopped Pius Dipheko in the seventh round of their welterweight fight in Johannesburg on Friday night.

The polished Namibian was impressive in beating his SA opponent at the Turfontein Racecourse in a bout scheduled for ten rounds.

Neither fighter dominated at any stage during the first three rounds, both showing slick defensive skills.

In the fourth round Ushona (66.30 kg) dropped Dipheko with an unintentional low blow and began scoring with fast left-right combinations.

Showing all his experience, Ushona also dominated in the sixth round. Midway through the seventh he moved in with a flurry of blows to the head.

Dipheko (66.40 kg) was sent staggering across the ring before dropping to his knees. Referee Phillip du Randt waved the fight off one minute 45 seconds into the round.

Ushona's record improved to 22-0, with 4 stoppages, and Dipheko dropped to 19-7-2; 3.

Former SA junior heavyweight champion Danie Venter (107.20 kg), now fighting in the heavyweight division, scored his second win after being out of action for nearly four years.

Venter laboured to a six-round points decision over Sting Gonorenda (90.80kg) from Zimbabwe, improving his record to 10-3; 7. Gonorenda dropped to 6-8; 5.

Former SA and World Boxing Foundation junior featherweight champion Oscar Chauke (56.92 kg) impressed in stopping Gotlieb Ndokofho (56.82 kg) from Namibia in the first round of a featherweight contest. The time was 2:37.

Rudolph Venter (78.22 kg) stopped Rudy Bruwer (79.02 kg) at 45 seconds of the fifth round in a light-heavyweight bout scheduled for six rounds.

In another light-heavyweight contest Ryno Liebenburg (78.62kg) scored his second win inside the distance since making his professional debut when he stopped Fikile Nyalungu (78.12 kg) 2 minute and 58 seconds into the opening round.

Junior welterweight Kyle Bothma (62.84 kg) beat Jeremiah Joshua (62.72 kg) from Tanzania on points over six rounds.

Promoter Andre Kerr of Seconds Out Promotions should be congratulated on producing a good evening's boxing.
