Houston title bout cancelled
The WBA title fight between Guillermo Rigondeaux and Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym has been cancelled.
The two would have met in Houston on Saturday night but Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym failed to pass a medical test on Thursday.
The Thai’s latest bid to reclaim the WBA super-bantamweight title fell through when Texas officials refused to approve the bout against the Cuban star.
They would have met on the undercard of the tournament in which Nonito Donaire faces Jorge Arce in one of the bouts to be televised live on SuperSport on Sunday morning, SA time.
No details have been announced. Promoter Bob Arum just said: "The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation notified us today that they would not issue a licence to Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym."
"I feel sad for both fighters who trained very hard. Top Rank's matchmakers are working to bring Guillermo back to the ring as soon as possible."
Poonsawat's American debut would have given him a chance to reclaim the crown he held in 2010.
The Thai fighter has a record of 48-2, including 33 knockouts. It would have been his fourth bout of the year and his second within three months.
Cuba-born Rigondeaux, standing at 11-0 with eight knockouts, would have made the third defence of the title he won last January when he beat American Rico Ramos.
