Hernandez retains IBF title



Yoan Pablo Hernandez retained his IBF cruiserweight title when he beat Steve Cunningham on points in Frankfurt, Germany, on Saturday night.

The Cuban won their rematch by unanimous decision: 116-110 on two cards and 115-111.

Hernandez, a southpaw, had Cunningham on the canvas in the fourth round but the American recovered to see out the bout.

Hernandez was making his first defence of the title he won from Cunningham on a controversial split technical decision in October last year.

That bout was stopped after six rounds after Hernandez suffered two cuts from a clash of heads when the Cuban was leading on points.

Hernandez, based in Germany since 2005, improved his record to 26-1, including 13 knockouts. Cunningham dropped to 24-4; 12 KOs).

Earlier, Alexander Alekseev won the European Boxing Union cruiserweight title when he beat Enad Licina on points: 118-110, 116-112 and 118-112.

Alekseev improved to 23-2; 20 and Licina dropped to 21-4; 11.

Mateusz Masternak remained unbeaten at 25-0; 19 when he stopped Michael Simms (22-16-2; 14 in the fourth round of a cruiserweight bout.

Eduard Gutknecht (23-1; 9) retained his European light-heavyweight title when he beat Vyacheslav Uzelkov (25-2; 16) on points: 115-114, 116-112 and 117-111.
