Cuban wins WBA title in ninth fight
Guillermo Rigondeaux stopped Rico Ramos in the sixth round to take the WBA super-bantamweight title in Las Vegas on Friday night.
The Cuban, a two-time Olympic Games champion, won the title in only his ninth professional fight.
The undefeated Rigondeaux, a defector to the United States, floored the overmatched Ramos with a straight right in the first round.
He maintained control throughout and ended the bout with a left hook to the body.
Rigondeaux landed three consecutive straight rights that backed Ramos into a corner in the sixth round, before throwing the devastating left hook that sent Ramos to the canvas in pain.
The bout was over 1 minute 29 seconds into the round.
"I wanted to make history,” Rigondeaux said. “I'm very happy. This is a historic moment."
The new champion now has a professional record of 9-0, including 7 knockouts. Ramos, suffering his first defeat, dropped to 20-1, with 11 knockouts.
On the undercard, Joel Diaz stopped Guy Robb in the seventh round of a super-featherweight bout.
Diaz was down the second round but Robb took two trips to the canvas in the third. The stoppage came 2 minutes 20 seconds into the seventh.
