Veteran Rubio sets the scene
The boxing year got off to a low-key start when Marco Antonio Rubio beat Wilson Santana on Saturday night.
Rubio won the middleweight bout in Torreon, Mexico, on an eighth-round stoppage.
The Mexican veteran, who was stopped by Kelly Pavlik in 2009, improved his record to 49-5-1, including 42 knockouts.
Santana lost his unbeaten record and dropped to 11-1, with seven stoppages.
Rubio, who also lost to Kassim Ouma earlier in his ten-year career, is hoping to take on some highly rated middleweights this year. He is rated No 3 by the WBC.
On the same card, Marco Reyes won his middleweight bout against veteran Rito Ruvalcaba in the first round, improving his record to 19-1, with an eye-catching 17 knockouts.
Ruvalcaba dropped to 34-11; 30.
In a featherweight bout between two experienced campaigners, Miguel Roman stopped Angel Priolo in the opening round.
Roman now stands at 33-7; 25 and Priolo at 30-9; 20.
