Sensational win for Segura
Giovanni Segura stopped previously unbeaten Ivan Calderon in the eighth round of a sensational fight in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, on Saturday night.
Segura, the WBA mini-flyweight champion, became a dual champion by beating the holder of the WBO mini-flyweight title.
Calderon, whose record dropped to 34-1-1, with six knockouts, controlled the fight in the early rounds, but Segura (now 25-1; 21) picked up the pace in rounds five and six, hurting Calderon with several punches.
However, Calderon weathered the storm and controlled the seventh round.
In the eighth, Segura dropped Calderon for the count with a devastating shot to the liver. The fight was over 1 minute 34 seconds into the round.
On the undercard, former Olympian, junior welterweight Alex De Jesus, moved to 20-1; 13 when he won on points over six rounds against Jose Angel Roman (11-26-5; 5).
Another former Olympian and amateur world champion McWilliams Arroyo (4-1; 3) beat Jovanne Fuentes (2-1; 1) on points over six rounds in a flyweight bout.
OTHER RESULTS
In Sydney, former Australian middleweight champion Junior Talipeau improved his record to 16-1; 5 when he beat Sonni Michael Angelo (16-10-2; 5) on points over eight rounds. The scores were 79-72, 80-73 and 78-73.
And in Melbourne, welterweight Steve Maxwell (8-3; 6) stopped Yodmongkol Singmanasak (11-9-1; 7) in the fifth round of a ten-rounder to retain the Australian WBC title.
In Rosario, Argentina, Lucas Matthysse moved to 27-0; 25 and retained his WBO Latino junior welterweight title when he knocked out Rogelio Castaneda (26-16-3; 8) of Mexico in the first round.
Former world title challenger Sebastian Lujan (34-5-2; 22) retained his WBC Latino welterweight title when he stopped Emilio Julio (16-8-1; 8) of Colombia in the seventh round.
Los Angeles: Featherweight Ronny Rios beat Leivi Brea on a fourth-round tko. Rios (12-0; 6) dropped Brea (17-9-3; 9) twice in the round before the bout was stopped at 2:59.
Rostock, Germany: Middleweight Hamid Rahimi (16-0; 6) stopped Armen Azizian (9-11; 1) in the fourth round to win the vacant WBA PABA title.
Pittsburgh: Super featherweight Monty Meza-Clay (29-3; 20) stopped Allen Litzau (13-6; 7) at 2:47 of the third round.
Buenos Aires: Marcos Maidana (29-1; 27) retained his WBA interim light-welterweight title when he outpointed former world champion DeMarcus Corley (37-14-1; 22) over 12 rounds. The scores were 117-110, 115-112 and 116-110.
Atlantic City: Heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon improved to 27-2; 19 when he stopped Livin Castillo (16-10; 10) in the seventh round. On the same bill, super-middleweight Farah Ennis (16-0; 10) stopped Reggie Pena (6-4; 1) in the third.
