Down, up and win for Shumenov



Beibut Shumenov survived a first-round knock-down and beat Vyacheslav Uzelkov on points to retain his WBA light-heavyweight at the weekend.

Fighting in Lemoore, California, the relatively inexperienced champion improved his record to 10-1, with six stoppages, by winning 118-108 on two cards and 117-109 on the third.

Previously unbeaten Uzelkov dropped to 22-1, with 14 knockouts.

On the same bill, Rico Ramos beat Cuauhtemoc Vargas on points over eight rounds. Ramos improved to 17-0; 9 and Vargas dropped to 15-4-1; 10.

In Houston, Texas, heavyweight Steve Collins improved to 23-1; 16 when he knocked down Anthony Greely bantamweight Alejandro Hernandez moved to 24-7-2; 13 when he stopped Jesus Ceja (13-7-1; 8) in the seventh round.

In Los Mochis, Mexico, Ramon Garcia Hirales beat WBO interim mini-flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero on a split decision over twelve rounds.

Hirales had to come from behind to win on two cards. One judge had it 115-113 for Casimero and the other two made it 115-113 for Garcia.

Hirales improved his record to 14-1-1; 8 and Casimero now stands at to 14-1; 8.

In Mexico City, bantamweight Alejandro Hernandez (24-7-2; 13) won by seventh-round technical knockout against over Jesus Ceja (13-7-1; 8).

In the co-feature, light-flyweights Ulises Lara (16-1-3; 14) and Luis Ceja (11-3-2; 5) drew over eight rounds.

In Temecula, California, middleweight Craig McEwan beat Danny Perez on a majority decision – 97-93, 97-93 and 95-95. McEwan now stands at 18-0, with 7 knockouts and Perez at 34-7; 17.

Featherweight Charles Huerta improved to 14-1; 8 when he knocked out Jonathan Arias (15-6; 8) in the sixth round.

In Los Angeles, junior lightweight Gary Russell Jr (11-0; 8) stopped former two-division champion Mauricio Pastrana (35-15-2; 23) in 106 seconds.

Former bantamweight title challenger Nestor Rocha moved to 22-1; 8 when he knocked out Benji Garcia (14-16-3; 1) in the second round.
