Zab returns with KO win

American Zab Judah knocked out Jose Armando Santa Cruz in the third round of a junior welterweight bout in Newark, New Jersey, at the weekend.

Judah dominated the first two rounds, then floored the Mexican with a straight right in the third.

A groggy Santa Cruz got up before being counted out, but was defenceless for eight straight punches when referee Benjy Estevez jumped in and stopped the fight at 2 minutes 33 seconds.

Judah was fighting for the first time since November 2009. The former undisputed world welterweight champion improved his record to 39-6 with his 27th knockout. Santa Cruz fell to 28-5.

STATUE FOR LARRY HOLMES

Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes is getting a statue in his eastern Pennsylvania hometown.

Organisers have held a groundbreaking ceremony at Scott Park in Easton, north of Philadelphia.

The statue will be 2.7 meters tall and weigh between (272 and 363 kg. It will stand across the street from the restaurant and office plaza owned by the 60-year-old former champ.

The Hall of Fame boxer known as the "Easton Assassin" retired with a record of 69-6, with 44 knockouts.

Holmes used the same shovel at the groundbreaking that he used to break ground on the office plaza. Private organisers have sold engraved bricks to raise funds for the statue. Its unveiling is expected by October.
