Stars of the 2012 London Games


Boxing enthusiasts who keep records of major events should find this summary of the 2012 London Olympics tournament a useful source of information.

There were 250 men and 36 women competing for 39 medals. The men fought in ten categories and the women in three. All the bouts took place at the Excel Arena.

Medal winners – women

Flyweight (51 kg) – Nicola Adams, Britain (gold), Ren Cancan, China (silver), Marlen Esparza, US, and Mary Kom, India, bronze.

Lightweight (60 kg) – Katie Taylor, Ireland (gold), Sofya Ochigava, Russia (silver), Mavzuna Chorieva, Tajikistan, and Adriana Araujo, Brazil (bronze).

Lightweight (60 kg) – Vasyl Lomachenko, Ukraine (gold), Soonchul Han, South Korea (silver), Yasniel Toledo Lopez, Cuba, and Evaldas Petrauskas, Lithuania (bronze).

Light-welterweight (64 kg) – Roniel Inglesias Sotolongo, Cuba (gold), Denys Berinchyk, Ukraine, (silver), Vincenzo Mangiacapre, Italy, and Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeng, Mongolia (bronze).

Welterweight (69 kg) – Serik Sapiyev, Kazakhstan (gold), Fred Evans, Britain (silver), Taras Shelestyuk, Ukraine, and Andrey Zamkovoy, Russia (bronze).

Middleweight (75 kg) – Ryota Murata, Japan (gold), Esquiva Falcao Florentino, Brazil (silver), Anthony Ogogo, Britain, and Abbos Atoev, Uzbekistan (bronze).

Light-heavyweight (81 kg) – Egor Mekhonycev, Russia (gold), Adilbek Niyazymbetov, Kazakhstan (silver), Esquiva Falcao Florentino, Brazil, and Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Ukraine (bronze).

Heavyweight (91 kg) – Oleksandr Usyk, Ukraine (gold), Clemente Russo, Italy (silver),Tervel Pulez, Bulgaria, and Teymur Mammadov, Azerbaijan (bronze).

Super-heavyweight (over 91 kg) – Anthony Joshua, Britain (gold), Roberto Cammarelle, Italy (silver), Ivan Dychko, Kazakhstan, and Magomedrasul Medzhidov, Azerbaijan (bronze).

Val Barker Cup: The Val Barker Cup was awarded to welterweight Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan.

Barker was a British boxer who won the 1891 Amateur Boxing Association of England heavyweight championship. He became the first honorary secretary of the International Amateur Boxing Federation in 1920. He was president of the England Amateur Boxing Association from 1926 to 1929. In 1936, the Val Barker Trophy was introduced. It is presented to the outstanding boxer at the Olympic Games.
