Adamek too good for Estrada
Tomasz Adamek retained his IBF International heavyweight title when he beat Jason Estrada 115-113, 116-112 and 118-110 in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday night.
Taking his record to 40-1, with 27 knockouts, the former light-heavyweight champion had a 12-round battle against the 2004 Athens Olympic Games fighter.
Estrada dropped to 16-3; 4 and also dropped to his knees in disappointment when the result was announced.
Adamek, 33, and fighting out of New Jersey, was making the first defence of his heavyweight belt after holding the WBC light-heavyweight and IBF cruiserweight titles.
The 29-year-old Estrada, from Providence, Rhode Island, put on a courageous performance but lacked the scoring ability of the champion who had won the vacant title when he stopped countryman Andrew Golota in the fifth round.
The only blot on Adamek’s record was when he lost against the unbeaten and highly talented Chad Dawson in February 2007. It cost him his WBC light-heavyweight belt.
On the same bill, super middleweight Peter Quillin won 98-92, 100-90 and 100-90 against Fernando Zuniga in his first fight in 18 months. Quillin now stands at 21-0;15 and Zuniga at 28-10.
