Stevens claims double
Sprinter Brent Stevens claimed a double victory in the 60 and 150 metres events at the Yellow Pages Summer Series in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
"It is early days, being the pre-season, but I am happy with my form," said Stevens.
"If I want to be competitive in 2012 I know I need to lower my best times and that is the goal. I want to run sub 10.2 [in the 100m] and faster than 20.60 [in the 200m] next year and see if I cannot qualify for the Olympics."
In the women's sprints, it was Cindy Stewart who tore away to also win a lucrative double in the 60 and 150 metre events.
Stewart has made no secret she would like to try 'something new' in 2012 and has her sights set on the indoor circuit.
"I think I would do well on the indoor circuit, especially in the 60m sprints. I have a good start and that is, even more so than in the 100m, the key factor," said Stewart.
Stewart was unbeaten in the series in 2010 and is on track to repeat that result with one more event to go in Parow on Saturday.
South African Junior Champion in the 200m, Wade van Niekerk, won
the men's 300m beating both rising talent Shaun de Jager and World Championship 4x400m Silver Medalliist, Shane Victor.
In the long jump, World Junior champion, Luvo Manyonga opened with a 8.07m jump - good enough for the win, with his closest rival, Zark Visser pulling out midway through the competition with a hamstring problem.
