Kiprop romps to record win in Madrid

Kenyan Francis Kiprop won the Madrid marathon in a record time on Sunday as he crossed the line in two hours 10 mins and 57 secs.

The 30-year-old was followed home by compatriot Nickson Kurgat 20 seconds adrift with Ethiopian Herpasa Kitesa finishing in third.

There was something for the home crowd to shout about in the women's race as Spaniard Vanessa Veiga won in a time of 2:36.42.

It was the first time since 1998 that a Spanish female had won the event as the 33-year-old produced a wonderful final kick 50 metres from the line to edge out last year's winner Ethiopian Desta Girma Tadesse with Russia's Nina Podnevesnova finishing third.

The race was preceded by a minute's silence and runners wore black armbands in memory of those killed in the Boston marathon attacks earlier this month.
