Mokoka, Kalmer to lead Half Marathon team

SA half-marathon champions Stephen Mokoka and Rene Kalmer will lead the South African team at the World Half Marathon Championships taking place in Kavarna, Bulgaria on 6 October.

Mokoka will be joined by Lucky Mohale and Gladwin Mzazi in the men's team, while Kalmer will compete together with her sister Christine as well as Nolene Conrad.

After competing in the marathon at the Olympic Games in London, Mokoka won his second half marathon of the year at the SA Half Marathon Championships in Cape Town in a personal best time of 60:57, which was a significant improvement from the win in Sasolburg early in February, where he clocked 65:11

Mohale and Mzazi finished second and third at the Championships, their times clocked at 61:08 and 61:38 respectively. Both athletes also ran personal best times in Cape Town.

Rene Kalmer’s aim at the World Half Marathon Championships is to dip under the 70-minute mark and she already got closer to the target after her win at the SA Half Marathon Championships.

She competed at the Great North Run in Newcastle, England where she finished the race in 70:13.

Like Mokoka, Kalmer also competed in the marathon at the Olympic Games in London.

Her teammates Christine Kalmer, and Nolene Conrad finished behind Rene at the SA Half Marathon Championships, their times 75:23 and 76:13 respectively.
