High jumper Friedrich out of Europeans
Ariane Friedrich of Germany pulled out of the European championships at the last moment because of stomach problems on Wednesday, robbing the 2009 high jump bronze medalist of one of her last chances to qualify for the Olympics.
Friedrich got sick with nausea overnight and failed to make the early-morning start of qualifying for the final. She needs to jump 1.95 metres to make the German team but only has 1.92 so far.
It leaves the Olympic competition wide open because it is uncertain how well former world champion Blanka Vlasic will have recovered from several health problems.
World champion Anna Chicherova and American Chaunte Lowe have been the top performers this year.
