Gregson, Lomong to test Centrowitz at Millrose
Australian Ryan Gregson and Sudanese-born Lopez Lomong will challenge American defending champion Matthew Centrowitz in the mile next month at the 106th Millrose Games, organisers announced on Tuesday.
The February 16 meet, no longer run at New York's Madison Square Garden but instead staged at the city Armory, will also feature American Robby Andrews and Irish Olympian Ciaran O'Lionaird in the mile.
Centrowitz, fourth in last year's 1500 metres Olympic final, is determined to try and break the meet record of 3:52.87 set by Bernard Lagat, who is also the American record holder in the event at 3:49.89.
"I've never been this fit this early. It's really exciting," Centrowitz said. "I'm definitely going after Bernard Lagat's meet record and if the race goes really well, I could get Bernard's American record, too."
Lomong, the 2008 US Olympic flag bearer who escaped the Sudanese army to become a two-time American Olympian, was 10th in the 5000m final in the London Olympics.
Gregson, the Australian 1500m record-holder, finished fifth in the Fifth Avenue Mile last September in his most recent "Big Apple" start.
