SA swimmers rake in the medals
An additional ten medals were added to the South African Swimming Team's tally on Wednesday, the third day of the 11th African Senior Swimming Championships taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.
Michelle Webber and Rene Warnes bagged the gold and bronze in the 400m freestyle in 4:19.60 and 4:28.25 respectively, while Egypt's Reem Hussein took the silver in 4:26.55.
Later on in the evening both Webber and Warnes were a part of the gold-winning quartet in the 400m freestyle relay alongside Kyna Pereira and Lehesta Kemp. The team finished in 3:55.54 ahead of Egypt in 4:01.38 and Algeria in 4:02.67.
Kemp did not stop there as she claimed the gold in the 100m backstroke, clocking 1:03.68 ahead of teammate Nathania van Niekerk in 1:04.96. The bronze medal went to Egypt's Marym Rahman el Sayed in 1:06.98.
The 50m breaststroke race was won by Tara Nicholas, who touched the wall in a time of 33.15, with Egypt's Mai Abdelfatta and Rowida Mohamed Tolba taking the silver and bronze in 33.56 and 34.39 respectively.
On the men's side, Myles Brown ended the evening on a high note, grabbing two gold and one silver medal.
In the 100m freestyle, Brown topped the podium in 51.06 and won the silver in the 200m backstroke in 2:07.19. Ricky Ellis' 2:08.52 guaranteed him the bronze in that event.
In the final race of the day, the 800m freestyle relay, Brown, Michael Meyer, Ayrton Sweeney and Abdul-Malick Railoun brought home the gold in 7:42.68 ahead of Egypt (7:44.80) and Tunisia (7:48.06).
