Schoeman in fine fettle



Roland Schoeman continued his fine form as he claimed two gold medals on the first day of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in Tokyo on Wednesday.

With the return of Cameron van der Burgh to South Africa, Schoeman raced to the top of the medal podium in the 50m breaststroke, clocking 26.42. Japan's Kosuke Kitajima and Ryou Tateishi followed in 26.95 and 27.00 respectively.

Schoeman made his second visit to the top of the podium later on in the evening in the 50m butterfly.

His trademark fast start won him the gold in a time of 22.56 ahead of Germany's Steffen Deibler (22.64) and Japan's Kohei Kawamoto (23.21).

Graeme Moore finished second in the 100m freestyle with a time of 47.53 after Australia's Kyle Richardson (47.26). Sergey Fesikov from Russia claimed the bronze in 47.61.

Darian Townsend followed with a bronze medal in the 100m individual medley. Townsend touched the wall in 53.00 behind Thiago Pereira from Brazil in 52.84 and Japan's Takurou Fujii in 52.92.

The Tokyo leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup wraps up on Thursday, after which the swimmers move to Europe where the fifth leg will be taking place in Berlin on 30 and 31 October.
