Entries open for Africa's largest beach event
Entries for season 6 of the Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series - Africa's largest family beach lifestyle event, open today (1st September). The Series, which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay, is one of the Provinces highest profile events attracting over R25m in media coverage last season with over 6,000 entries and a year on year participation growth of over 20%.
"The Series has grown fantastically over the last couple of years and is a great boost for the Metro as we try and claim the title of being Africa's water sport capital." said Series organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports, "Despite the massive media exposure and return on investment for sponsors, the support from private sector is very disappointing and we find ourselves without sponsors for this season."
Season 6 will consist of 10 race days, held on mostly alternate Sunday mornings at Hobie Beach, between Sunday 7th November 2010 and Sunday 3rd April 2011. Each of the race days will consist of a 1km and 3km Ocean Swim, a 5km Beach Run/Walk, the Varsity College 5km Ocean Paddle and a kids (12 years and under) 1km Beach Run/walk. Participants take part in only one of the 5 events on offer on a race day and qualify for lucky draw prizes valued in excess of R15,000 with the top lucky draw prize on race days being R1,500 cash.
Series membership costs just R100 with all members receiving a membership pack which includes a Series t-shirt, tog bag and swim cap. A premier membership package is also available to all members who sign up and pay for the entire season. Premier Membership offers a two race discount, hassle free race day registration and the first 200 premier members will each receive a Crocs voucher for Crocs shoes.
A Series registration function will take place at Profiles Health Club on Friday 5th November where all members will receive their registration packs ahead of the first of the 10 race days on Sunday 7th November. Race day entry fees for each of the 10 race days on offer during Season 6 will be R60 for the 1km or 3km Ocean Swim, R60 for the Varsity College 5km Ocean Paddle, R40 for the 5km Beach Run/Walk and R20 for the kids 1km Beach Run/Walk for kids 12 years and under.
