Ho impressive in Roberval

Chad Ho produced a much improved performance in claiming a credible seventh place in the 5km event at the FINA World Championships in Roberval on Tuesday.

Compatriot Natalie du Toit, after finishing 26th in the women's 10km race at the 2010 FINA World Open Water Swim Championships in Roberval on Saturday 17 July, hit the water in the 5km race and finished in 21st place.

The USA's Eva Fabian was way too strong for the field and had already opened a 7sec gap by the half way mark. Her storming attack from the gun spread the field immediately as she left the rest of the 31 swimmers in her wake.

A few hours later, it was Ho's turn to take to the water in the 5km race. After finishing third in the same event in 2009, the difficult conditions made it a tough swim in 2010 as Ho ended 7th in a time of 57:57.

Germany's Thomas Lurz claimed the gold as he finished only 15sec ahead of Ho in 57:42 with the silver going to Evgeny Drattsev from Russia (57:44) and the bronze to USA's Francis Crippen (57:46).

Following the 6th FINA World Open Water Championships, both Du Toit and Ho will be joining some of SA's top swimmers at the Telkom SA Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg from the 6th - 9th August as they strive to qualify for the FINA World Short Course Championships in Dubai later in the year.
