Gorman reinstated after appeal

Australian swimmer Melissa Gorman was restored on Tuesday as the bronze medalist in the open water world championship, three days after she was disqualified for unsporting conduct in a rough race finish.

Swimming's governing body reinstated Gorman because the appeal jury which threw her out of the 10-kilometre medal event had no right to adjudicate.

"As an open water swimmer can only be disqualified by a referee, the jury of appeal has decided to reinstate Melissa Gorman as winner of the bronze medal," FINA said in a statement.

China's Fang Yanqiao was demoted to fourth, after having been awarded bronze following Saturday's race in Roberval, Canada.

FINA said its appeal jury on Tuesday confirmed the race referee's decision to disqualify Aurelie Muller of France, who was involved in a three-way battle for the runner-up medals with Gorman and silver medalist Giorgia Consiglio of Italy.

Another Italian, Martina Grimaldi, won the gold medal by 12 seconds after timing two hours, five minutes, 45.2 seconds.

The French team appealed Muller's disqualification to the race jury, which studied video of the finish and confirmed her unsporting actions, before spotting another infringement by the Australian.
