European champs to be moved to London

Antwerp organisers say the European swimming championships will be moved from the Belgian city to London because of a budget shortfall.

The organising committee said Thursday that the move was at the instigation of the European swimming federation (LEN) and the event will now be held at the Olympic swimming facilities.

The shortfall was in excess of $400 000, but Antwerp organisers were confident they could have found new sponsors to bridge the gap when LEN decided to pull the championships out of Belgium.

The event was due to be held from May 16-27 in Antwerp but it is unclear if the dates will remain the same in London.

LEN could not immediately be reached for comment and British swimming refused to comment pending a LEN announcement.
