Phelps furious after poor Paris showing
US swim star Michael Phelps admitted he was "furious" with himself after a poor showing in the Paris Open meet which ended on Sunday.
The record eight-time Beijing Olympic champion competed in four events in the two-day Paris meet, winning two.
Phelps, 25, won the 200m butterfly and the 200m medley but was just third fastest in the 200m freestyle and sxith in the 100m freestyle.
"I'm disappointed but I know as well that it's my fault," said Phelps.
"I didn't train exactly when I should have. We see the result this weekend. I hoped to be faster this weekend. There are a lot of things which could have been better."
"I'm not worried but angry and that acts as a motivator for me.
"Let's hope this is a wake up call. In the 200m free I started quite well but then everything went wrong. I had hoped that my training would give me better results."
French teenager Yannick Agnel beat Phelps in the 200m freestyle and also outclassed the American by finishing second in Saturday's 100m freestyle.
"It's good to have a new newcomer over the distance," said Phelps.
"He seems to be good (technically) in the water. Like many he could become a rival in the future over this distance. But for the moment I'm the won playing catchup with him."
Meanwhile, France's Alain Bernard failed to qualify for the 50m freestyle final after also being knocked out in the 100m freestyle on Saturday.
Olympic and world champion Cesar Cielo of Brazil won the 50m in 21.55 ahead of French pair Fabien Gilot (21.83) and Frederick Bousquet (21.95).
