Adidas terminates German contract

German sports goods company Adidas has cancelled its contract with the country's swimming federation after swimmers' complaints that its suits were not competitive.

Given the recent success of swimmers wearing Speedo's latest high-tech suit, Germany's team members want the freedom to choose supplier rather than being forced to wear Adidas' suits.

"Adidas informed the German swimming federation today about the immediate annulment of the contract," company spokesman Oliver Brueggen said on Monday.

Further cooperation was not possible "in light of recent events," he said.

German swimmers have been protesting since the Olympic Games in Beijing that their Adidas suits were inferior to Speedo's LZR Racer.

Swimmers using Speedo's suits that increase buoyancy have broken dozens of world records in recent months.

The latest criticism from German swimmers came at last week's short-course European Championship in Rijeka, Croatia.

Adidas said it had no intention to pull out of swimming.
