Trott strikes gold in Canet

Wendy Trott is the golden girl of South Africa's swimming team after powering her way to victory in the 800m freestyle final on the opening night of the three-day Mare Nostrum gala in Canet, France, on Tuesday.

Trott, an ex-Capetonian who is studying international law at the University of Georgia in the US, made her bold bid for the honours with 200 metres to go, taking the gold medal in 8 min 32.70 secs.

National team coaching Dean Price, who is with the SA swimmers in France, said: "Trott's win was a bonus but the manner in which she held her own in a highly tactical race, was definitely a positive sign for her as she continues her preparations to represent SA at the Fina World Aquatics Championships in Rome, from July 26-August 2."

Thabang Moeketsane put in a brave effort in the 50 breaststroke B final, ending in fourth spot in 29.21.
