Swimming administrator dies
Fina vice president Bill Matson has died at the age of 72 following surgery which he underwent on the closing days of the world swimming championships in Shanghai.
World governing body Fina said in a statement on Monday from Lausanne, Switzerland, that New Zealand-based Matson was a bureau member since 1996 and became vice-president in 2005. He was involved in several aspects of the recently-concluded world titles, including open water swimming.
The world championships ended July 31. Details of Matson's surgery were not released by Fina or by his family.
Swimming New Zealand chairman Murray Coulter said "we had all expected he would make a speedy recovery . It's an absolute tragedy for the family and for the sport of swimming."
