Fina adopts biological passports to fight doping
Swimming governing body Fina has decided to adopt a biological passport program to combat doping.
Fina executive director Cornel Marculescu tells The Associated Press at the world championships, "We have approved to start building the results here."
The move comes a week after Olympic champion Cesar Cielo was cleared to compete at the worlds by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, sparking criticism from other swimmers.
First used in cycling, biological passports contain detailed accounts of athletes' blood profiles, variations of which could indicate doping.
Blood tests taken at these championships will form the basis for the first swimming passports.
