Three Indians test positive for doping

Three Indian swimmers have failed doping tests but a wrestler has been reinstated to the Commonwealth Games team after an earlier identity mix up led to him being named as a drug cheat and banned from competition.

India's National Anti-Doping Agency on Sunday reported swimmers Amar Muralitharan, Richa Mishra and Jyotsana Pansare had tested positive for the stimulant 'Methylhexaneamine'.

"We have been informed by NADA about the three swimmers failing dope tests. But we will suspend them only if their B samples also test positive," Swimming Federation of India secretary Virender Nanawati said in a statement.

India's anti-doping agency admitted on the weekend to an embarrassing mistake involving Joginder Kumar, who competes in 120-kilogram freestyle wrestling.

His name was contained on a list released last week of athletes who failed drug tests.

Kumar, who was due for Commonwealth Games selection because another wrestler had already tested positive, was immediately banned.

But it later emerged that the Joginder Kumar who failed a routine test was a different athlete. NADA apologized to the wrongly-identified Kumar and reinstated him to the team on Saturday.

India has had a serious of positive tests in recent years, mostly involving weightlifting.

Six weightlifters were caught for doping offenses last year and the national federation had to pay a $500,000 fine to return to international competition in time for the Oct. 3-14 Commonwealth Games.
